Daintree Dreaming

Well we arrived at Cape Trib (still a 6 hour turn over) had some lunch and went  for a walk to suss the place out.  The country is really pretty but the weather has turned on us a bit, being a bit wet and windy.  The camp is quiet though and there are no lights shining right outside the camper all night which is relaxing.  Here the boys were looking for crocs down the Myall Creek then we walked over to the Masons swimming hole and had a swing on the rope.

George of the jungle had a go!
That night we went to the campfire after dinner and cooked some marshies and made some friends.  The next day the boys made spears to go crabbing and were looking the part before we did a big walk up to the Cape Trib Beach House had some lunch and hiked back.

The boys had a swing on the big rope and we watched Peaceful Warrior before bed to balance all the crazy spear chucking stuff!  Then Sunday the action heated up and Dennis the Menace, Super Boy and Darth went Jungle Surfing after a big bacon and egg cook up for strength.

Jarrod (Adelaide boy), Leigh (northern Pom) and Blair (Kiwi) were fun, upbeat dudes that did their best to scare us, pretending they hadn’t fastened the rope, but the boys were unflappable.  The view from the second tower (about 25m up) was sensational.

We did a slow one with a stop in the middle first, then a super fast one and Wooz did his skating moves, and then an upside down one.

Fun time had by all, and the boys talked a lot about the rainforest as well.  In the arvo we went to the Tropical Fruit Tasting with Digby and Allison.  We tasted all the fruit in the bowl and it sure was different.
NaDan wouldn’t go near it and Wooz found it hard going because it is all very sugary but I enjoyed the Abiu, the black pudding fruit, the custard apple, the  dragonfruit and the first citrus fruit.  We then had a walk through the orchard and saw the permaculture approach to farming which was great but would not work commercially.  Only the mangasteens were sold commercially and they were quite unreliable.  The boys have been loving the caravan park, getting back to nature and just playing our own fun games on the beach or on the grass and making a fort and Baby Nathe had some quiet time with Mummy doing, some drawing, playing games, checking the map and the coconuts and just generally chewin the fat while we were jungle surfing.

Monday we did another awesome tour with Big Mick.  He took us into the rainforest in Noah Valley for a half day and taught us all about the plants, and took us up to the falls where we relaxed and had some billy tea and anzac bickies.

We walked all the way up the creek, boulder hopping and Mick decorated Wooz with some warrior paint.  But the warrior disappeared when Baby Nathe slipped and grabbed hold of him causing Wooz to whack his head on an overhanging rock and split his head open.  Once he saw the blood he did a Baby E and went all faint- it definitely runs in the blood!  Mick had some antiseptic powder and we got a good cuppa into the little fella and he finally came good.  Gave him the Child reminder too- skin grows back.  Mick had just finished telling us not to pull on the vines because big branches can fall down and take you out- they are known as widow makers! Would’ve thought Mick had been able to find a tree that healed the cut in seconds.  Instead he cut the plant that you use for spears so the boys could make some real ones and that cheered Wooz up.
Then we went back to a nice swimming hole and had a play with his pet python Tigger.

Mick then gave us some Barramundi wings that we cooked up for lunch then the boys worked on their spears and then we had a huge game of ultimate on the beach which Kirst and Arch won 4-3.  Then we followed that up with a spear throwing contest and Wooz nailed the coconut.  Kirst cooked up noodles for dinner and we hit the fire for some more marshies.  Big day at the office today.   The last day at Cape Trib saw us venture down to the Coopers Creek cruise where we heard all about the mangroves and did some croc spotting.  There is a good close up of a female croc just poking its head out of the water then a more obvious one with its mouth open, meaning back off, but everyone thought the croc looked fake.

Then we went to the bug house and saw a bird eating eating spider (alive), a peppermint stick insect (alive), another big stick man (alive), and the rest were dead- a giant titan bug, giant scorpions, hercules moth and an assortment of butterflies and other insects.  The boys also spotted a little green snake in the grass.

From there we buzzed up the road to Thornton Beach and had lunch at the beach cafe then went to the biodynamic icecreamery for guess what?

Then we went and had a look at the Daintree Discovery Centre but it was too much info for the boys they want hands on interactive stuff not read and look, they are "kays" from normal school stuff at the moment, as you can see above!  The lady said no running on the boardwalk so the boys raced the whole way up to the lookout.
Then we got back and attempted a bike ride on the beach to Emmagen Creek but the track across the cape was blocked so we turned around and rode back into the wind back to camp.  There the boys went off with their friends until dinner.   Everyone has really enjoyed this caravan park, surrounded by beautiful trees, and lots of grass to play.  Up early in the morning to hit the Bloomfield track to Cooktown to see if we can find the cookie monster.
